A sun hoodie is a lightweight, long-sleeved hooded top made from technical fabric, designed to block UV while staying cool and breathable. It covers your arms, neck and head so you are not reapplying sunscreen all day, and it dries fast when you sweat through it.
Sun hoodies and lightweight technical layers
A sun hoodie is the most useful piece of warm-weather outdoor clothing you can own — hooded, long-sleeved sun protection that is cooler to wear than a t-shirt in open country.
New Zealand has some of the harshest UV in the world. A lightweight sun protection hoodie covers your arms, neck and head all day without sunscreen, and dries in minutes when you sweat through it.
Why use a sun hoodie?
It looks like a hoodie and works like technical outdoor equipment. Four reasons it ends up being the piece people wear most.
All-day UV cover
Fabric does not wear off, sweat off or need reapplying at midday. Cover the skin and the sun problem is solved once.
Cooler than bare skin
Counter-intuitive but true in open country — blocking direct sun and holding a film of moving air beats burning.
Barely there to carry
Light enough to wear from dawn, packs to nothing, and doubles as your base layer when it cools off.
Dries in minutes
Sweat through it on the climb and it is dry by the time you are glassing. A cotton hoodie stays wet all day.
Sun protection vs standard hoodies
They share a shape and nothing else. One is built for warmth indoors, the other for heat and UV in the open.
Cotton hoodie
- Heavy cotton or brushed fleece
- Holds sweat and stays wet for hours
- Gets heavy and cold once damp
- No rated UV protection
- Hood is styled rather than shaped
Technical sun hoodie
- Lightweight technical knit built for heat
- Wicks and dries in minutes
- Stays comfortable wet or dry
- Rated sun protection across the whole garment
- Hood, collar and thumb loops shaped for coverage
Breathability, moisture control and coverage
Three things separate a lightweight sun protection hoodie from a thin sweatshirt.
Breathability and moisture control
An open technical knit lets heat escape and moves sweat to the surface where it evaporates. That is what makes covered skin cooler than bare skin in the sun.
Hood, face and neck coverage
The back of the neck and the ears are where most people burn. A proper sun hood sits under a cap and covers both without cooking you.
Doubles as a base layer
When the temperature drops it goes straight under a mid layer, so it earns its place in the pack across seasons.

Sun hoodie FAQs
What is a sun hoodie?
Is a sun hoodie hotter than a t-shirt?
In direct sun, usually not. Blocking the sun off your skin and holding a thin layer of moving air against it is more effective than exposing bare skin to full UV. In shade or still, humid air a t-shirt can feel cooler — but on open country in the middle of the day, a sun hoodie wins.
What is the difference between a sun hoodie and a normal hoodie?
A sun hoodie is a lightweight technical layer built for sun protection and breathability. A normal hoodie is heavier cotton or fleece built for warmth. Sun hoodies dry fast, cut UV and stay comfortable in heat; a cotton hoodie holds sweat, gets heavy and offers no rated sun protection.
Can I wear a sun hoodie as a base layer?
Yes, and that is a large part of why they are worth owning. A lightweight hooded layer sits perfectly under a mid layer or shell when it cools down, so the same piece works from a hot morning through to a cold evening.
Do I still need sunscreen with a sun hoodie?
On anything the fabric does not cover — face, hands and the front of the neck if the collar is open. The point of a sun hoodie is that it takes care of the large areas permanently, so the sunscreen you do apply is a much smaller job.
